Alongside the São Tiago Fortress, is the Barreirinha Bathing Complex. The rocky beach faces the Port of Funchal, and it has a direct access to the sea, with good conditions for swimming.
The complex includes a large sunbathing terrace, WC, changing rooms, lockers, bar, sunshades, sun loungers and a first aid post. Lifeguard on duty.

West of Funchal, Praia Formosa is the largest public beach in the area. This beach is connected to the Lido Promenade and Promenade that connects to Câmara de Lobos. The Complex consists of four sand and shingle beaches, with lifeguards on duty in the summer. The area features parking, changing rooms, toilets, first aid post, a children’s playground, restaurants and bars.

Cabo Girão

Nestled at the foot of the right side of Cabo Girão, it is accessible only by boat or by the Quinta Grande cable car (10€ return).
With easy access to the sea, the transparency of the water and the variety of species along the coast attracts visitors for diving and fishing. There is a sunbathing area , lounge chairs and beach umbrellas. At the entrance of the property, next to the restaurant, there are showers and cabins.

The yellow sand beach at Calheta was opened in 2004. It is 100 m long and has two sloped breakwaters as a form of protection.
Located near the Marina, it features a sunbathing area of about 7,300 m2.

The pebble beaches of Jardim do Mar have free access and are very popular among surfers, who consider the waves of Jardim do Mar the best in Europe.

Rua Forte São João Batista, Porto Moniz

The Cachalote Natural Swimming Pools, located at the entrance to the village of Porto Moniz, are volcanic in origin and one of the village’s best known visitor attractions.
Entry to this bathing area is free of charge and, despite having no supporting infrastructure or toilet facilities, there are outside showers and lifeguards during the bathing season.
These pools can be found close to the Madeira Aquarium and the Living Science Centre.

The natural pools of Porto Moniz are natural salt water swimming pools, made up of volcanic rock, into which the sea flows naturally.
This space, with a surface area of 3800 m², has a children’s swimming pool, a children’s play area and disabled access.
In addition, the beach has changing rooms and bathrooms with lockers, a snack bar open during the summer months, first aid facilities, sun loungers and sunshades for hire.

The Seixal Natural Swimming Pools, found close to the Laje beach in Seixal, can be accessed free of charge.
The pools and their surrounding areas have been adapted for use, but their peculiar features have been safeguarded. These pools of volcanic origin, set in an incredible landscape, are filled with clean, crystal clear sea water.
The beach has a kiosk and toilet facilities with showers, but is not manned by lifeguards.

The Laje Beach Complex is located in the parish of Seixal.
This beach is hidden between rocky outcrops and has the unique beauty of a landscape with hues of green from the mountain and the crystal-clear blue of the sea.

Opened in September 2004, the São Vicente Bathing Complex is located in Fajã da Areia, midway between the villages of São Vicente and Ponta Delgada.
It has a sunbathing area with direct sea access, restaurant, bar, gym, parking and a long promenade.
There are also facilities for water sports here, such as canoeing, sport fishing, surfing and body boarding.
In addition, this beach also has a picnic area, changing rooms, first aid facilities and a huge sunbathing terrace.

The Calhau de São Jorge Beach Complex, located at the mouth of the São Jorge River, is a small beach with fantastic views.
This pebble beach has a small freshwater lagoon with a depth of up to 5 metres in some places, as well as a beach complex with three swimming pools and a restaurant.
Despite having access to the sea, bathing is not recommended as the sea is often rough in this area, attracting surfers and body boarders only.

Nestling at the base of the Garajau cliffs, the Garajau beach is inside the Garajau Natural Partial Reserve.
The beach can be accessed by cable car. The stellar attraction of this beach is its calm and crystal clear waters, highly prized among scuba divers.
Changing facilities, a first aid post and a picnic area can be found at the Garajau beach.
Porto Santo

Porto Santo has a long sandy beach, stretching over nine kilometres from Vila Baleira to Ponta de Calheta – one of the island’s favourite swimming spots, and also a great place for a meal or sunset cocktail. The water is warmed by Gulf Stream currents and the mild makes this an ideal beach-holiday resort.
The soft sands are supposed to have healing properties for certain ailments, and from time to time you’ll see people buried up to their necks!
